Origin vs. Texture: What’s the Difference?Updated 8 days ago

When shopping for bundles, closures, or wigs, you’ll notice two important details in the product description: Origin and Texture. Understanding the difference will help you choose the hair that best matches your desired look.

What is the Origin of the hair?

“Origin” describes one of the key differences between bundle types. This difference can be subtle when just looking at photos online, because the most noticeable feature tends to be the texture (curl or wave pattern).

Instead, origin refers to the strand characteristics — things like thickness, weight, how the hair falls, and how it feels to the touch (silky, smooth, or somewhat coarse).

  • Brazilian – Thickest strands, closest to a “natural” texture of hair.

  • Indian – Comparable in thickness to Brazilian, but with a smoother feel and more body.

  • Malaysian – Medium strand thickness; not as thick as Brazilian and not as fine as Peruvian.

  • Peruvian – Finest strands with a soft texture and natural shine. Could be described as "more silky." Fun fact:  Because strands are finer, more hair fits into each bundle, which often makes Peruvian hair appear fuller overall.

What is the Texture of the hair?

“Texture” refers to the curl or wave pattern (or lack of one). This is usually the most visible difference and plays a big role in how the hair looks once installed.

Mayvenn Hair is available in 8 different textures.

  • Straight – Sleek, smooth strands with no curl or wave, though there may be a slight bend at the ends.

  • Yaki Straight – Mimics tightly coiled hair that has been silk pressed or chemically straightened. Slightly less shine and more texture than Brazilian, Peruvian, or Indian straight hair.

  • Kinky Straight – The most textured straight option; mimics tightly coiled hair that has been blown out straight.

  • Body Wave – Loose, soft “S”-shaped waves with a bouncy, natural look. This is our least curly/wavy texture.

  • Loose Wave – Larger curls with a slightly more coiled appearance than Body Wave.

  • Water Wave – “S” and “C”-shaped coils that are looser than Deep Wave, giving a soft, almost “wet” look.

  • Deep Wave – Semi-tight spiral curls with body and bounce; more defined than Water Wave.

  • Curly – Tight, kinky coils that mimic natural 3C hair; the fullest and tightest curl we carry.

Choosing the right hair

  • Origin = individual strand thickness and feel (Brazilian = thick strand, Peruvian = fine strand, etc.)

  • Texture = curl/wave pattern (straight, body wave, curly, kinky, etc.)

Together, these details determine how the hair will blend with your natural hair and what styling results you can expect.
